The Rhythm and Blues is a designation for a variety of black music styles from the United States, that appeared in 1940. In the Second World War, it was difficult to keep a lucrative schedule of shows, so some “big bands” leaders were forced to reduce the groups. So they were called “jump blues” and just later the expression Rhythm and Blues came be used.
After contribute for rock’n roll development, R&B was used - especially by whites groups – to refer to musical styles that were based on blues or electric blues, gospel and soul music. It is a style that involve the jazz swing, creating the hard bop, with the blues ‘rhythm and riffs, in sensual songs about love.

The music done by principals Britain rock groups in 1960, as The Beatles or Rolling Stones, have sources on R&B, making this style broad and influential on the contemporary music.
The style have been interpreted by talents as Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Boyz II Men, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, Whitney Houston and others.
Today no one uses the expression “ rhythm and blues”, but R&B or soul music, covering the pop and funk music.
